  JDRF's Mission   About Diabetes   What's New

The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

Since its inception in 1970, JDRF has provided more than $1.3 billion in funding for diabetes research. The JDRF Seattle Guild's Annual Dream Gala is proud to have contributed over $40 million to diabetes research over the past 19 years, bringing us closer to a cure.

Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease affecting every organ system.  There are two major types of diabetes: type I diabetes, an autoimmune disease also known as juvenile diabetes, and type 2 diabetes, a metabolic disorder also known as adult onset diabetes. For people with type I diabetes, the pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables the production of energy from food. Multiple, daily injections of insulin or a continuous infusion through an insulin pump, ensures only survival. It is not a cure, nor does it prevent the eventual and devastating complications of the disease.

Because it changes lives;
Because you never outgrow it;
Because it is there every minute of every day;

We need a cure.
